Spay/Neuter and Rabies Vaccination Campaign in Nairobi
The Kenya Veterinary Association – Women Branch (KWVA) in conjunction with the Spay Sisters from the European Union and other partners carried out spay and neuter, community sensitization on rabies, deworming, and anti-rabies vaccination of dogs and cats from the 19th February to 2nd March 2022 in Ruai, Kayole and Kibera constituencies in Nairobi City County. The drive aimed to contribute to humane dog and cat population control and rabies control in Kenya.
The Spay Sisters is a non-governmental organization comprising of female veterinarians and veterinary nurses from multiple European countries who donate veterinary materials and supplies as well as their time to assist countries around the world in controlling stray dog and cat populations through sterilization campaigns. Twelve ladies came to Kenya for the campaign and were hosted by KWVA through provision of accommodation and transport within the country during the campaigns.

Expected Impact
The spay/neuter sterilization campaigns intend to control rabies disease through neutering and vaccination activities in Nairobi. This is expected to be happening annually during the month of February which is recognized as the World Spay/Neuter Awareness month.
Challenges
- Limited resources restricted the timeline and coverage of the vaccination, deworming and neutering activities.
- Low turnout was experienced in some of the venues especially during weekdays.
